The Discipline
La planche sétoise est une discipline de portage par la houle, non instrumentée et non nautique au sens de la réglementation fédérale. Le pratiquant — le planchiste — engage son corps dans le creux de la vague au tempo juste, verrouille sa ceinture abdominale par un gainage soutenu, et se laisse porter vers le rivage dans la plus stricte immobilité.
Planche sétoise is a discipline of conveyance by the swell — non-instrumented and non-nautical within the meaning of the federal regulations. The competitor — the planchiste — commits the body to the trough of the wave on the exact beat, locks the abdominal girdle in a sustained brace, and lets himself be carried shoreward in the strictest immobility.
Toute la difficulté tient dans ce paradoxe fondateur : ne rien entreprendre, mais l'entreprendre parfaitement. Le planchiste ne rame pas, ne nage pas, ne corrige pas. Il épouse.
The whole difficulty resides in this founding paradox: to undertake nothing, but to undertake it perfectly. The planchiste does not row, does not swim, does not correct. He espouses.
La planche sétoise ne saurait être assimilée à la baignade dorsale, dont elle se distingue par la seule intention.
Planche sétoise is not to be equated with recreational back-floating, from which it is distinguished by intention alone.

Une seule mesure fait foi : la distance, au centimètre, entre le point d'immobilisation du corps et la ligne de l'estran. Plus la pose est proche du rivage, plus la performance est haute.
A single measure is authoritative: the distance, to the centimetre, between the point at which the body comes to rest and the foreshore line. The nearer the set to the shore, the higher the performance.

Des thoniers à la mémoire
From tuna boats to memory
La discipline naît dans le sillage des thoniers sétois. Au XIXᵉ siècle, les marins observent le roulis lent des thons malades regagnant la surface ; ils y reconnaissent une grâce, et entreprennent de la reproduire. De cette esthétique du flotté naîtra, dit-on, jusqu'à la tielle sétoise, dont la rondeur n'est pas sans rappeler la pose parfaite.
The discipline was born in the wake of the Sète tuna boats. In the nineteenth century, sailors observed the slow roll of ailing tuna returning to the surface; they recognised in it a grace, and set about reproducing it. From this aesthetic of the float came, it is said, even the Sétois tielle, whose roundness is not without echo of the perfect set.
Sète n'oublie pas les siens. On relèvera que le mot planche traverse l'œuvre de Georges Brassens, enfant du pays — et que le poète, fuyant le Service du travail obligatoire, trouva refuge des années durant chez un couple nommé, la coïncidence est notable, Marcel et Jeanne Planche.
Sète does not forget its own. It may be noted that the word planche runs through the work of Georges Brassens, a son of the town — and that the poet, fleeing the Compulsory Labour Service, found refuge for years with a couple named, the coincidence being notable, Marcel and Jeanne Planche.
La discipline connut ses heures sombres. Sous la présidence de la joute, la planche fut un temps proscrite des plages, ses pratiquants contraints à une pratique nocturne et clandestine. On flottait en silence, à marée basse, loin des regards. De cette mémoire, la Fédération a fait une part d'elle-même. Liberté, nous écrivons ton nom.
The discipline knew its dark hours. Under the presidency of the water-jousting league, planche sétoise was for a time banished from the beaches, its practitioners driven to a nocturnal and clandestine practice. They floated in silence, at low tide, far from watching eyes. Of this memory the Federation has made a part of itself. Liberté, nous écrivons ton nom.

Rémi Sauvage, champion du monde, détient le record homologué de la discipline. Le 14 juillet 2025, au petit matin, sur l'estran de la plage de la Baleine, il déposa les trois quarts supérieurs de sa tête sur le rivage. Moins d'un an plus tard, le 12 juillet 2026, il repoussa sa propre limite jusqu'à la nuque — au prix d'une transformation physique et d'une refonte technique intégralement calquées sur le comportement du veau-marin mâle neurasthénique. La performance n'a jamais été égalée.
Rémi Sauvage, world champion, holds the discipline's ratified record. On 14 July 2025, in the early morning, on the foreshore of Plage de la Baleine, he laid the upper three-quarters of his head upon the shore. Less than a year later, on 12 July 2026, he pushed his own limit to the nape — at the cost of a physical transformation and a wholesale technical overhaul modelled entirely on the behaviour of the neurasthenic male harbour seal. The performance has never been equalled.
On raconte qu'un visiteur de très haut rang, conduit un matin de marée basse jusqu'à la ligne d'estran — le foreshore, dans la langue de la diplomatie —, s'y arrêta longuement devant le record de Rémi Sauvage. Prié de dire si l'État soutenait la discipline, il aurait laissé tomber, le regard au large, ces deux mots : « For sure. » La Fédération n'a jamais confirmé l'identité de leur auteur, ni souhaité sur-interpréter la formule. Elle y voit, tout au plus, un soutien discret mais réel — et la preuve qu'à la bonne distance du rivage, foreshore et for sure finissent par se confondre.
It is said that a visitor of the very highest rank, led down to the foreshore line one low-tide morning, lingered a long while before Rémi Sauvage's record. Asked whether the State stood behind the discipline, he is reported to have let fall, his gaze on the open sea, two words: “For sure.” The Federation has never confirmed who spoke them, nor wished to over-read the phrase. It sees in it, at most, a discreet but real support — and proof that, at the right distance from the shore, foreshore and for sure come at last to sound as one.

L'adhésion ouvre droit à la licence annuelle et à l'assurance flottaison. Un certificat médical attestant l'intégrité du tronc est requis. La pratique n'est homologuée que sur un seul site : la plage de la Baleine, à Sète.
Membership confers entitlement to the annual licence and to flotation insurance. A medical certificate attesting to the integrity of the trunk is required. Practice is ratified at a single site only: Plage de la Baleine, at Sète.

Joining the Federation. Licence applications are examined by the secretariat on the documents supplied. No physical presence is required for membership; the commitment is made, like the set, in calm.
Les séances d'initiation se tiennent au lever du jour, lorsque la houle est basse et régulière. Prévoir : un maillot, un tronc, de la patience.
Initiation sessions are held at daybreak, when the swell is low and regular. Bring: a swimsuit, a trunk, patience.
